How to Back Up and Restore Your PlayStation 5 Data?

Save your PlayStation 5 valuable game files, screenshots and more in the event there is a loss.

The backup of your phone, computer and other devices means that your data is backed up in the eventuality of a catastrophic accident, power outage or a complete hardware failure. However, there aren’t many who would consider doing the same thing for their gaming consoles. Fortunately, PlayStation 5 is a great console to backup your data. PlayStation 5 makes it easy to save your data on an external USB storage device as well. PlayStation Plus subscribers can safely transfer their gaming data onto the cloud.

It is important to note that backup your data in this manner is not the same as expanding your PlayStation 5 storage using an external hard drive. While technically, they achieve similar functions, the Restore and Back Up and Restore features are useful for transferring data that you don’t require immediately on your PS5 and recovering in the event of a crash or corruption.

Expanding the storage of your PlayStation 5 On the other hand, it allows you to install (and in certain cases play) games on the hard drive. However, it requires certain types of hard drives as well as USB cables. We’ll go over how to expand the storage capacity of your PlayStation 5 in a separate article; however, in the meantime, let’s talk about the steps to backup all of your PlayStation 5 data.

Back up and restore PS5 information using the external USB hard drive

This feature of the PlayStation 5’s Back Up and Restore feature can be used with a selection of USB storage devices; however, you’ll need to ensure that you have enough room on your drive before starting with the process of backup.

  • Go to Settings > System > Back Up and Restore.
  • Select “Back Up Your PS5.”
  • Make sure to connect your computer with the PS5 using a USB cable.
  • Choose which data you want to backup. The lower-right bar indicates how much space the selected data will take in the drive externally.
  • Choose “Next,” then “Back Up” to start the process, and then wait for your data copy to complete. To ensure that your data is not damaged, Do not remove, disconnect or shut down your PS5 or USB drive when the transfer is running.
  • Once your data is stored, you can then disconnect your USB device. It will be stored safely in case you ever need to retrieve data from the USB drive. Here’s how to create backups if you require:
  • Connect the USB backup device into the PlayStation 5 and switch on the console.
  • From the home screen on the PS5 select Settings > System Backup and Restore.
  • Select “Restore Your PS5.”
  • Choose the information you wish to transfer from your drive onto your PS5. Follow the prompts on the screen to start the transfer.

Then, wait for the files to transfer. Again, don’t disconnect or shut off your PS5 or USB drive when the transfer is running.

How do I cloud-save information on the PlayStation 5

Although USB backups allow you to create a physical restoration point for all PS5’s information, PS Plus users can also backup games saved to the cloud. To do this, you must have the current PS Plus subscription. For automatic updates to be turned on for your PS5, however, it will automatically backup your saved game saves when the feature is activated. Here’s how:

On your PS5, go into Settings, System and Power Saving. Select Features available in Rest Mode. Enable “Stay Connected to the Internet.”

  • Then, go into Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  • To enable cloud save backups for PS5 games, go to PS5 Games > Sync Saved Data, and then enable “Auto-Sync Saved Data.”
  • For cloud-based backups to be enabled for PS4 games that are installed on your PS5, choose “PS4 games,” then select “Auto-Upload.”

When the options are activated, PlayStation 5 save data will instantly sync to the cloud as well as console, meaning you’ll have the most current save information available on both platforms. PS4 data is required to be downloaded manually to your console using the launch page for the game.
